(Best actress Kirsten Dunst as the tormented bride in Lars von Trier's Melancholia, the best competition film of the 64th edition of Cannes. Image courtesy of the festival.)
In the strongest and deepest competition since 2007, here is my own preference, in order and with corresponding grade. I wish I’d seen more titles in Un Certain Regard, especially Catalin Mitulescu’s Romanian feature Lover Boy, Na Haong-Jin’s The Murderer (The Yellow Sea) and Joachim Trier’s Oslo, 31 August.
Festivals are always about making immediate choices and dealing with the consequences later.
Break out the arguments.
